Five Tips to a Sexy Halloween Costume

Once upon a time, the focus on Halloween centered around children dressed in costumes running from house to house gathering as many candy treats as they could.  In the past few decades, Halloween has rapidly gained acceptance by adults scantly dressed in costumes, traveling to parties and bars gathering prizes for their much more adult styled attire.  The transition from spooky and scary to sexy and seductive can be made with the help of these five easy steps:

1) Fulfill a Fantasy

Although it is easy to put the word “sexy” in front of just about any standard costume: (e.g. sexy schoolgirl, sexy fairy etc.) keep in mind that this formula works only because these types of costumes fulfill a fantasy.   The fantasy could be of the storybook or fairy tale variety, the thrill of playing “doctor”, or possibly the seduction by a “person in uniform.”  However, just adding the word sexy to an otherwise non-sexy costume could spell disaster (just do a quick Google search on “Sexy Freddy Kruger” and you’ll see what I mean.) 

2) Stock Up

Due to the emergence of costumes created by hosiery and lingerie manufacturers such as Leg Avenue and Frederick’s of Hollywood, one of the common threads to all sexy costumes is the presence of some type of stockings or hosiery. Most common are thigh-highs in fishnet or opaque varieties.  Accentuate with a garter belt or switch out the cheaper stockings with a higher quality substitute to add some spice and variety to your costume.

3) Less Isn’t Always More

Believe it or not, there is a line between sexy and slutty when referring to Halloween costumes.  Most of the store bought varieties do a very good job of leaving some detail to the imagination and keeping a hint of allure.  Some manufacturers even provide a “Sexy Line” of some costumes for those who decide to show off a little more skin.  Crossing the aforementioned line by simply wearing little more than lingerie not only shows a lack of creativity, but can be viewed as an equivalent to a “This IS my costume T-shirt” on a guy.

4) Accessorize

With Halloween being a 5 billion dollar industry, it is not hard to imagine that you may be at a party where someone else has the same costume as you.  Stand out from the crowd by accessorizing with the right shoes, jewelry, makeup or props.  Try to use authentic details such as a real stethoscope with your nurse’s costume, or some fuzzy handcuffs with your cop costume and you will not only leave your competition in the dust, but you will have some great conversation ice breakers.  Also pay attention to the smaller details such as a French manicure and pedicure to go along with your French maid outfit and feather duster.  Choosing the wrong accessories (such as a pair of 80’s style Vans Slip-ons instead of some sexy heels) can cause a major hit to your sexy rating.)

5) Attitude

With all other aspects in place, the final piece to the puzzle rests in you.  With Halloween becoming a little less horror and a lot more hot, you have an opportunity to be a little more flirtatious or out-going than you usually might be.  Take advantage of this free pass to fun and really take on the character and incorporate a little of your own sexiness and attitude into your costume.
